In the early afternoon on Monday, June 10, we arrived at the train station where we caught a ferry to Georgetown on the island of Penang. Natalie & I had met Rani, an Indonesian girl, & FongFong, a Chinese girl, both also traveling independently, on the train. The three of them had decided to just spend the afternoon & evening in Georgetown & then take the next overnight train to Kuala Lumpur. I found a place to stay & dropped off my bags & the 4 of us went exploring.
We saw a Chinese temple & were glad our new friend could translate & explain some of the cultural parts to us, especially when we wandered into Chinatown. Rani was able to speak to the Malay people for us. We admired the colorful silks & saris in Little India, then tried some new Indian entrees for lunch. We had to put on robes & cover our heads in scarves to enter the Muslim temple, & I imagined how hot the poor women must be all the time. We see them here adorned in full black with only a slit for their eyes.
Later FongFong helped us sample some Chinese dim sum, &she showed me some of the most expensive teas from China & explained the differences.
What an interesting and multicultural day!
