In search of wildlife

On to the Kinabatangan Rain forest! I decided to take a 3 day/2 night tour and stay at a lodge in the jungle. We took several boat rides and hikes at different times of day to try to spot different types of wildlife. We saw some huge crocodiles alongside the river, many troops of monkeys including: long tail macaques, orangutans, and silver leaf monkeys. One of the more exciting spot was a civet, a type of wildcat, up in a tree at dusk, preparing to wander the night forest. We covered ourselves from head to toe to trek at night, wearing rubber boots and leech socks. The jungle in Malaysia is crawling with leeches that especially come out at night. They sense the vibration in the leaves moving and will hop onto their moving target. As they bite into your skin, the secrete a toxin into your blood which is an anticoagulant, to make you bleed out. I was rather paranoid of these blood sucking leeches...but by being vigilant and staying covered, I managed to make it out of the forest without coming into contact with them.






Our guide spotted many birds, but no monkeys at night. However during the morning and evening they seemed to be everywhere swinging through the trees. We saw a muse deer, several monitor lizards, and a scorpion.
